During these long flights, you can sleep, read a book, watch a movie, close your eyes and listen to the music, or if you are lucky you meet someone really interesting to have a nice 5-7 hour conversation with. The challenge is packing a book you can read and not get tired of reading, one you have to carry through the airport and lug with your baggage, only you have to have it outside your carry-on before you pack it away.

Well, I have a solution to this dilemma!

I propose that the airlines put Kindle Readers into the seat backs of the airline seats. They can charge -3 to turn them on and they are pre-loaded with electronic books – all of the New York Times Best Sellers List, along with all the classics, and business titles.

The airline would save in weight as fewer people would carry on magazines and books, and every pound of weight helps for fuel efficiency, especially on longer-flights across oceans or non-stops across the US. Additionally the airlines could take out a half-an-inch between seat rows, and add one extra row of seats at the end. On a large narrow body play this is 4-6 additional seats, and 4-6 additional passengers and airfares.

Meaning they make more money, which is something airlines must consider, that is if they want to remain in business – especially considering the rise in jet fuel costs, union demands, additional costs in health care insurance, and the cost to invest in the latest models of new ultra-efficient composite airliners in the future. Even first-class could take out a couple of inches between seats and add an additional row, 2 more first class seats.

It makes sense that the airlines make a deal with Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Apple Computer (iPad eBook Reader), or Borders Bookstore. Indeed, everyone can win, especially use frequent travelers who read fast, and don’t want to lug a lot of extra luggage on and off the plane.

The eBook seat back reader on aircraft could also be used for instructions in case of emergency, or to look at maps or information about the destination city, such as the lay-out of the airport, location for rent-a-cars, and places to eat. Advertising could thus, also be sold for these seat back eBook readers, and they hardly weigh anything, and would increase revenue on each flight for the airlines.
