Apparently, 600,000 people logged on to buy the 4 directly from the Apple iPhone and carrier partners, resulting in Snafu.
Apple in a statement that the problem simply came from the number of customers, and apologized for the problems encountered:
Yesterday, Apple and its carrier partners have a contract for more than 600,000 new Apple iPhone 4, said Apple.

This was the biggest number of pre-order Apple has never taken a single day, and was much higher than expected, resulting in a lot of order and approval system faults.

600,000 figure may be on sale around the world, it is listed on the homepage, but the UK Apple Store is now stating that pre-orders will not be delivered until July 2, rather than the previous day of 24 June .
