Amidst a lot of speculation and rumors, Apple announced a touchscreen tablet PC that is ultra-portable with a mere ½ inch thin body and a 9.7 inch display weighing just 1.5 pounds. The device is running on a custom 1GHz Apple “A4″ chip processor that was essential for multitasking that it boasts of. It possesses almost similar functionalities to the other popular Apple products like theiPod or iPod Touch. The application store for these devices is common too, and therefore almost identical applications, except for the fact that iPad will be Apple’s first device to use the iBookStore.
Talking about battery backup, this device comes with a 10-hour battery life and a month of standby. Apple here tries to present a tablet PC that is more efficient than laptops ( the battery life of 10 hrs instead of the 4.5 or 5 hrs, commonly found in laptops), yetultra-portable (0.5 inch thick with a weight of just 1.5 pounds).
Apple iPad will be available in 16, 32, and 64 GB memory specifications, with the expected connectivity options. Other major specifications include a 30-pin Dock connector, a speaker, a microphone, as well as an accelerometer and a compass. A keyboard dock is also provided, which connects underneath in the portrait orientation and offers a manual keyboard, as operating on a touch screen might not be that easy.
It supports up to 1024×768 VGA out and 480p composite out through the dock adapter cables. Further, a camera attachment kit allows you to import photos from your camera via USB or directly through an SD card reader. Connectivity options include Bluetooth, 802.11n WiFi and optional 3G. The optional 3G costs an additional 0, apart from the basic 9 for a 16-gigabyte model, 9 for a 32 GB version and 9 for a 64-gigabyte model withWi-Fi.
The language support is available for English, French, German, Japanese, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, Simplified Chinese and Russian. As far as the multimedia support is concerned, the supported audio formats includeAAC, Protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 Players (16 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV – supported video formats include .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video,
up to 2.5 Mbps , 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second. But the major concern here is, that it does not supports Flash ( an Adobe hallmark application). Flash is used across a majority of websites and web pages on the internet , so if you are talking about a superior browsing experience without flash, how is that possible? Nonetheless except for a few features, the device looks more like an inflated iPhone.
