My wife bought me a PSP last Christmas, which to be honest has been gathering dust for the last eight months due to all the amazing (and cheap) games I have found for my iPhone!
The best and most addictive game so far (by a long-shot) has been Monopoly from EA Sports. I shudder to think how many hours I have wasted playing this game, and how many times I have come close to throwing my phone at the wall in frustration!
Why do I keep coming back? Because there is something incredibly addictive about seeing your competitors land on your hotel and watching them crash into bankruptcy, as your bank balance soars and your empire explodes.
The iPhone app bears all of the same features as the original board game, but because it’s electronic, it moves at a much faster pace. Start with one opponent to get the hang of it, then play multi player for ultimate reward vs. frustration. Bid for land at auctions. Negotiate sales, purchases and trades with opponents. Stay out of jail (or in jail, if it suits you…). Get paid rent, escape tax, and win beauty competitions. Build houses and hotels, crush your opponents. Plus, all the old characters are still in play… the boot, the dog, the battleship, the iron and the hat.
The only criticism I have, is that that sometimes the computer (for some reason named Al?) appears to be cheating. Occasionally, the dice really doesn’t seem to work in your favour. You can have a row of hotels and watch your opponents skip past them without a single hit, when the odds suggest that at least one of them should get slammed. Maybe this is a coincidence, but you can’t help feeling robbed when this happens. Either way, it doesn’t stop you from playing again.
I believe you can also hook up with your friends on their iPhones via blue-tooth (although I haven’t tried this yet), so there’s plenty of fun and procrastination for all the family. Get your iPhone and download Monopoly now from your iTunes store for £2.99.
I’m a business manager for a marketing agency in Sussex, UK. I live with my wife by the sea, and enjoy sports, games, movies, music and cooking. My perfect day is a game of golf in the sun, followed by watching the sunset over the channel with a glass of wine or a cold beer.
