So earlier today I posted an article about PS3 installs and how to fix them. The response has been….well read the comments and see for yourselves I suppose. Basically there are some thoughts that it is a good idea and others than disagree. I think it may be good to clarify a few things….
1. The Disc – This is in no way to replace the install data on disc. As many people have noted, that would make the game unplayable for anyone that doesn’t have internet (yes, there are people that don’t have internet). This is meant to solve the issue I presented, which was waiting for a game to install rather than pop and play. Interestingly enough, while the issue was big in the past, people seem to have finally adapted to it. Which is a plus. Secondly, who would think of removing data from the disc that is needed from for the game anyway? That doesn’t even begin to make sense.
2. The Hard Drive – I don’t see the hard drive as an issue at all. People are acting like a hard drive is an overpriced unneeded accessory. You may recall that the PS3 can use any 2.5″ 5400 Sata Hard Drive which means you can price shop around. Nor do you have to do it, although if you are like me (and many others) your game data will remain on your hard drive until you finally get rid of the game it belongs to (And if you really are like me and many others, you NEVER get rid of your games). If this were the 360, I would certainly see how it becomes a larger issue (that is not an attack on the 360, just stating a fact).
I completely agree that large hard drive files are unacceptable (In my opinion, an install should be 2gb or less). I also know that not every game has a large hard drive file, which it appears that several commenters forgot. Manu stated this:
So instead of waiting 10 minutes for an installation, we should waste 3h one week before to download a 4Go file to instal which again, will take another 10 minutes
Well no. You could do those 3 hours while you are sleeping or similar to Capcom’s suggestion making a whole meal instead of a sandwich. Basically, the idea is to use time you aren’t using your PS3 to grab the install and not have to install 4gb of data that take 30 minutes of time you actually wanted to play (By that point you’ve unwrapped the disc and at least plugged it in, wouldn’t you rather play then?)
“This Won’t Work” commented No way would this work , I agree PSN would be bogged down and ISP companies are going to start capping soon . Comcast has a 250gb cap that goes into effect in a few days . (He also referred to another user as an idiot out of nowhere it appeared, which makes me think it’s just a double poster).
Maybe it’s a way to show internet companies like Comcast that users don’t want caps and for valid reason.
3. Uncharted – I think we all agree that Uncharted did it right. Minimal install, minimal load, great game. No doubt, it was done well. The fact is though, not every deverloper is going to even attempt this. The solution is aimed at those that are going to continue using installs (And we know they are going to keep using installs).
4. Insults – Wow, lots of these. Does it make you cool to call someone an idiot on the internet? Judging from today the answer is yes, indeed it does. Well tell ya what tough guys, if you don’t like it, come up with a better option. No one ever claimed it was perfect, in fact I think it’s far from it, but it’s an IDEA. Nothing more, nothing less.
That’s all for now, Leave your thoughts as always.
