I should start this article by telling you that I am vehemently against DLC that has doesn’t act as a game expansion in some way shape of form (For example, Purchasing new players for PAIN versus an expansion for Pixeljunk Monsters. ANYTHING already on the disc falls into the crap we should not be paying for category). In this current gen, DLC seems to be used as a way to cash in on gamers Case in point is the recent release of Yoda, for the PS3 version of Soul Calibur 4. At $5, Yoda proves to be a costly character especially when the download does nothign more than unlocks the content that is already on your gaming disc (which has to be illegal in some way, you paid for the disc already, how is it legal to charge you again for content on said disc? Interesting….). Namco has been the “Leader” loser of DLC in recent gaming with paint schemes for Ace Combat 6 and customes for Soul Calibur 4 quickly coming to mind. And if Sony takes heed, they just might be able to out do Namco.
Little big planet has already shown it’s versatility in the customazation of Sackboy’s world and more importantly in Sackboy’s appearance. Sightings of Metal Gear inspired Snake Sackboy and Final Fantasy Seph Sackboys have already been seen, but not noted if they are present in game or will be DLC additions. How do they take the crown of ripping off providing DLC to gamers in LBP? Team Sackboys.
Imagine this situation. How cool would it be for 4 Sackboyspeople playing a Devil May Cry inspired LBP level (Choose your title, Devil May SackBoy, Sackboy May Cry (perhaps a difficult level?), Devil Big Planet…The possibilities are endless here) as Dante, Vergil, Lady and Trish of Devil May cry fame. Heck why stop at there? Throw in the Sparda Sackboy and rule the planet with your DevilSack might. Not your thing? How about a Little-Final-Big-Fantasy-Planet filled with a team of Cloud, Sephiroth, Tifa and Aeris? Again, move on to Squall, Rinoa, Seifer and Quitis. Maybe even Tidus, Yuna, Rikku and Wakka sackboys running along a beach while playing the theme to Zanarkand.
Perhaps go for the ultimate in crossovers by creating Little-Kingdom-Big-Hearts-Planet featuring Sora, Kairi, Jack Skellington and a Final Fantasy character in a level created like Halloween Town! Add some music and your SackTeam could even replicate the opening of Nightmare Before Christmas with a little dance.
Feeling a little sneaky? How about Little-Metal-Big-Gear-Solid-Planet with Old Snake (already Seen here) Raiden, Liquid and Otocon? Of course the guns would be missing, but they could be replaced with lollipops or other LBP appropriate materials. Go for broke and cross console lines with a team of 4 Sackboy Master Chiefs (Again with lollipops). Or, just toss the old school gang from Mario into a sack and run through the Little Big Mario Planet World. Obviously there are some licensing issues to combat, but Snake showed up in Super Smash Brothers so it can be done.
So what it comes down to is how do we get these great teams? While user content will no doubt show up and create such marvels, Sony can and should make a move to get developers on board with the LittleBig Smash that this could be. Unfortunately, developers like to be paid and that means sets or characters will undoubtedly come with a charge (perfect time to implement something for nothing with trophies as well). With this push, Sony, and supporters of the LittleBig Costume bash, can make a good profit in DLC for LBP.
And with teams like those, I may just have to drop some cash myself.
Where do you stand gamers? Would you throw down your cash for LBP team costumes? Or throw down your controller? Leave your thoughts in comments!
