This iphone app by Fitnow can help you set and meet your daily caloric budgets. You can also record your food and exercise using a searchable database. You can re-enter food and meals you have had in the past, and use detailed online reports to track your progress. In a nutshell, it shows you the number of calories each food item has, and enables you to channel your eating habits towards keeping yourself within caloric limits for a certain goal, say weight loss or just staying in shape.

My Fitness Pal
This program has an iphone app that has received good reviews on its usefulness in dieting programs. It uses the fact that we tend to eat the same kinds of foods and that what determines weight actually going off and staying off is that your activity level has to surpass your caloric intakes. This app has a a food diary and activity log that helps you track your food intake (and hence the number of calories you take in) versus your activity level (and hence number of calories burned off).
This app presently has a searchable food database of more than 507,000 items, a personalized diet profile to suit your weight loss goals, a personal food database that allows you to add your own food items and recipes, and other great features.
