Freeview, the company behind the roll out of free-to-air digital broadcasting in the UK has released its own iPhone application. The software, which gives users access to an electronic programme guide allowing them to plan their high definition TV viewing, was unveiled in the middle of February and is now available through the Apple store.
The application has information on the BBC and ITV’s high definition programing, along with information on over 50 other Freeview channels. With a short description on what’s available over the coming days you can be sure of never missing your favourite programme again.
Announcing the arrival of Freeview’s new application, Tim Hunt, the company’s marketing director, said: “As Freeview HD rolls-out across the UK, viewers can plan their HD viewing wherever they are. The launch of this smart app will allow users to cut a quicker path to their favourite channels and get the most out of planning their TV viewing.”
The release of the application follows the launch of Humax’s HD-Fox T2, which is the first Freeview set top box to be released in the UK, with the capability of showing high definition content. Work is going on now to roll out the digital network across the United Kingdom and as more areas of the country switch to the digital signal, the number of households capable of accessing high definition content will increase rapidly.
The current goal is to provide around 50 per cent of the country’s population with access to HD content by June, before the start of the 2010 Fifa World Cup which is taking place in South Africa.
