It’s just a matter of time before the iPhone is available on all networks, but Verizon is definitely making the most headway with their relationship with Apple. First though, and before Christmas, the iPad for Verizon will be made available.
Apple said Thursday that Verizon Wireless will begin selling the iPad at its stores on Oct. 28.
The announcement is the latest sign that the relationship between Apple and Verizon is warming up. Verizon is expected to begin selling Apple’s iPhone early next year.
Verizon will not be selling 3G versions of the iPad, which work over a cellular data network. Instead it will sell bundles that include the iPad’s WiFi models and its own MiFi mobile hotspot device, which essentially allows users to connect to the Internet in any place that has 3G service. The bundles will cost 0 for a 16-gigabyte model, 0 for a 32-gigabyte model and 0 for a 64 gigabytes. Verizon will offer a monthly access plan to iPad customers for up to 1 gigabyte of data. In addition, Verizon will offer all three iPad models on a standalone basis.
“We’re thrilled to be working with Verizon Wireless to get iPad into the hands of even more customers this holiday season,” Tim Cook, Apple’s chief operating officer, said in a press release.
John Stratton, chief operating officer for Verizon Wireless, said: “iPad together with the nation’s largest and most reliable 3G data network allows customers to easily connect on the go wherever they are.”
Apple also said that all 3G models of the iPad will be sold at AT&T stores, adding further distribution muscle to the iPad just ahead of the holiday season. The iPad is also expected to go on sale at Wal-Mart on Friday.
