Actress Sandra Bullock has nabbed the golden ring for 2009 as the top Hollywood star at the box office, according to a survey of cinema owners.
A poll of hundreds of owners by Quigley Publishing lists the 45-year-old performer as top dog for 2009, raking in $315 million US worldwide for her comedy The Proposal, co-starring Canadian Ryan Reynolds.
She followed that release with the football drama, The Blind Side, which has garnered $193 million in the U.S. and Canada since its Nov. 20 rollout. The film, based on a real-life story, is due to be unspooled in the rest of the world this year.
The only dark spot for Bullock was her other comedy, All About Steve, which was widely panned and only nabbed about $34 million during its short cinema life.
Quigley Publishing said the list, first launched in 1932, isn’t just about how much a star’s movie or movies rakes in but what theatre owners say about who attracts audiences.
Bullock, who first rose to fame with 1994′s Speed, is only the eighth woman in the list’s history to hold the No. 1 spot.
For 2009, Johnny Depp came in at No. 2 followed by Matt Damon, George Clooney, Robert Downey Jr., Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf and Denzel Washington.
