If you haven’t played the game “Angry Birds” it seems you are missing out. The game has been one of the most successful ‘mobile’ games in history. Because of its success it is now going to become available for those with traditional game consoles. The company Rovio, said it is trying to work out versions for Xbox 360, Wii and Playstation 3.
The company’s CEO also revealed that they are working on Angry Birds 2. The game is said not to be a sequel but a completely new game that happens to feature the angry birds and the evil pigs. In the new game, the pigs are a lot more active and there are a lot more of them.
If you have never played Angry Birds, it is a puzzle video game. It was first released for the iPhone and iPod Touch, since then the company has sold over 10 million copies for other touchscreen based smartphones.
The game is played like this. Players have to take control of a flock of birds that are attempting to retrieve their eggs. The eggs have been stolen by the evil pigs. The pigs hide in various structures, some are made of wood, others glass or stone. To win the game, you must eliminate all the pigs in each level. How do you eliminate them? You have to use a slingshot that shoots birds. Each shot must either hit the pig or damage the structure they are in so it will collapse on the pigs. Don’t run out of birds before you kill all the pigs or you will have to start over.
In the game, there are many different types of birds used to shoot at the pigs. At the beginning of each level, you are told how many birds you have and what type. The birds have to be launched in the order provided, which thus requires some strategic thinking. For example, in the beginning, the red bird is the only one available. As you progress through other levels, birds with special abilities are activated. The blue bird can separate into three smaller birds. The black bird will self-destruct and the green bird can reverse direction.
To shoot or aim at the birds, you do so by dragging your finger across the screen to establish the right angle and then let go.
This is not all. As you progress through levels of the game, additional objects can be located within the structures. You can use these objects against the pigs. They include explosives and rocks. You will need these because the pigs themselves become more difficult to destroy. They will appear in different sizes and also have different abilities. Some of them wear helmets and armor, so you had better be prepared with the right equipment to get rid of these pigs.
If you are a good shot, you get rewarded. There are bonus points given for any unused birds. The levels within the game are given chapter names and have been released with updates over the game’s lifetime. In 2009 there was the “Poached Eggs” chapter. In 2010 the release of “Mighty Hoax”, “Danger Above”, and “The Big SetUp” could be obtained.
The nice thing about the game is that gameplay is set up to be in short sessions and the game saves your last completed stage. This is great for mobile devices as it means you can play while standing in line or have a few minutes to spare. As for the new game designed for game consoles, maybe the sessions will be a bit longer. I guess we will have to wait and see.
