Here comes the odd news that not all retail stores which carry the iPhone 4 will also carry the Verizon iPhone 4 (here’s more on the Verizon iPhone 4), and along with it comes an odd quandary. While Apple’s own retail stores will certainly carry both the Verizon and AT&T flavors of the iPhone 4, and no one is expecting AT&T retail stores to carry the Verizon version, now comes the news from several corners that Best Buy may skip the Verizon iPhone 4 despite the fact that it’s already selling the AT&T iPhone 4. If true, this will put Best Buy employees in an odd situation, and it’ll put Verizon customers who shop at Best Buy in an even odder one.

Between the two of them, Apple and Verizon will conspire to ensure that every consumer in America who comes into contact with any kind of mainstream advertising will be aware that the Verizon iPhone 4 is coming to market. But some Verizon customers, upon hearing the news, will head to their favorite Best Buy store expecting to be able to buy one. What does the store employee say to that? A vague “We don’t carry that” or a misleading “We have the iPhone, but it’s only AT&T” or a libelous laundry list of concocted reasons why the customer should avoid the Verizon iPhone 4 altogether? And even then, does the salesman try to steer the customer toward a different Verizon phone such as the Droid, or seeing that they really want an iPhone 4, attempt to get them to switch to AT&T just to make a sale?

It’s a long way from a decade ago, when Apple placed iMacs in Best Buy and ultimately had to remove them because the sales geeks were running off their libelous laundry lists in a desperate attempt to keep customers from buying something as non-geeky as the iMac. Here in 2011, electronics store sales geeks have long ago succumbed to the fact that many or most non-geek customers are looking to buy some form of Apple product. But if the Verizon iPhone 4 is indeed a no-show at Best Buy, even as the entire nation is being made aware that it’s available elsewhere, the sales geeks may have a very different reason to try to steer customers away from this particular Apple product. The impracticality of such a scenario on all sides suggests that sooner or later, the Verizon iPhone 4 will arrive in Best Buy one way or the other. Here’s more on the Verizon iPhone 4.
